The Special Adviser to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Environment, Babatunde Hunpe, on Thursday said the government was following due process before demolishing buildings on drainages.
Hunpe, who made the assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Badagry, Lagos, said the government was dealing with people who built on drainage or canals in a civil manner.
He said: “We do not demolish without taking the plight of the people into consideration.
“When we discover that your building is obstructing free flow of the canal or you built on the drainage, what we do is to engage and educate the people in the area.
“We will educate the owner of the building on the danger in building on our canals.
“We will dialogue with the community; we will agree together that we are removing the obstruction.
“When we agree on this and do it accordingly, then there will be no noise on issue of demolition.”
Hunpe said that engaging the people concerned and dealing with them in civil manner before demolition had reduced much noise about it.
He said that the government had got it right on the issue of flooding, adding that there was no report of flood or casualty during the heavy rainfall in the state.
