The Kwara State House of Assembly on Wednesday suspended the member representing Malete-Ipaiye-Oloru Constituency, Hon. IIiasu Ibrahim, over alleged intimidation of his colleague, Hon. Yusuf Tanke, representing IIorin South Constituency.
The suspension order was announced by the Speaker, Hon. Rasaq Atunwa, after the House had adopted the report of its Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Judiciary.
Tanke had in a petition alleged that Ibrahim intimidated him.
The House unanimously agreed that the suspended member should stay away from the House for three months without pay.
It also directed the suspended member to write a letter of apology to Tanke seven days to the expiration of his three-month suspension, failure of which his matter would be referred to the House Committee on Judiciary for further action.
This will be the second time the House will suspend the member within the last one and half years.
The House had suspended Ibrahim for three months in May 2012 for accusing Atunwa of financial misappropriation.
Ibrahim condemned the suspension order by the House.
He argued that the House was incompetent to suspend him, adding that the allegation against him was in response to his refusal to defect to the All Progressives Congress.
Ibrahim expressed confidence that he would have the support of 98 per cent of the electorates from his constituency if an attempt was made to recall him.
“No intimidation from any quarter can make me change my decision to be a PDP member because I have benefited a lot from PDP and I will not bite the fingers that fed me,” he said.
Meanwhile, the House on Wednesday passed the Area Court Amendment Bill.
The Clerk of the House, Oyetunde Oyeniyi, read the bill for the third time and the lawmakers consequently passed it.
The Speaker directed the Clerk to produce a clean copy of the bill for Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed’s assent.
