Ahead of the November 16, 2019 Kogi State governorship election, the gubernatorial bid of Governor Yahaya Bello of the All Progressives Congress has received a major boost following the adoption of his candidacy by the Independent Democrats.
Acknowledging the inclusiveness of his administration, the National Chairman of ID, Hon. Edozie Madu, noted that the decision of the National Working Committee and other stakeholders was borne out of the participatory approach of governance adopted by Governor Bello.
The National Chairman, while urging the people of Kogi State to rally support for Bello in the interest of the state, admonished the political class to play the game by the rules, adding that there is no alternative to peace and tranquility.
Speaking with a cross-section of journalists at the National Headquarters of ID in Abuja on Tuesday, Madu, who described Governor Bello as a consummate politician and a people person, urged other political parties to support the younger generation in advancing the cause of the people.
In a letter dated September 3, 2019 and signed by Madu, delivered to Bello in Abuja on Tuesday, the National Chairman urged the state helmsman to use his second term if elected to consolidate of the achievements of his first tenure.
The letter reads in part: “Independent Democrats (ID) is a political party in Nigeria registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2013.
“The National Working Committee of our great party at its 34th meeting decided to adopt His Excellency, Governor Yahaya Bello as its candidate for the forthcoming governorship election in Kogi state.
“Having followed your initiatives despite paucity of resources, we are impressed with your performance and as such, we are solidly behind your candidacy.”
The National Chairman called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies, the electorate and other stakeholders to uphold and sustain democratic virtues before, during and after the election.
