Killings in Yewa: Oladele calls for government’s protection from Fulani herdsmen

The former member representing Yewa North/Imeko Afon Federal Constituency of Ogun State in the 8th Assembly, Hon. Kayode Oladele, has joined the ongoing calls for government’s urgent intervention and protection of Yewa people who are currently and constantly being violently attacked in an unprecedented manner by the Fulani herdsmen occupying their lands.

Oladele made the call over the weekend when he paid condolence visits to he families of some of the victims of the herdsmen attacks.

Quoting copiously from the Nigerian constitution, which he described as organic land of Nigeria, he noted that the welfare and security of the people shall be the primary responsibility of the government.

He therefore called on the State and Federal Governments to urgently address the state of insecurity in Yewaland in particular and the country in general.

He said: “ tensions  are building up everywhere in the most unprecedented manner, which require immediate government intervention in order to quell the fire and agitation for self help with its potential negative implications for the country.

“This is therefore not the time for mute indifference.”

Speaking further, Oladele enjoined the good people of Yewa to continue to be law-abiding in their usual manner, and maintain peace and cordiality with their neighbours, while also  assuring them that help is on the way.

In a similar vein, Hon. Oladele  who had earlier spoken with  newsmen from Ogun State Television in Abeokuta on Saturday over the same matter, further stated that until recently the people of Ogun State, especially Yewa, where there is a large concentration  of Fulanis and Hausas, have always lived peacefully together without any incident.

“We never had a problem. Everything was okay until very recently when the issue of herdsmen became very topical across the country. Taken into consideration the historical peaceful coexistence between the Yewa people and the Fulanis, it had always been my believe that the recent violence would happen in our community. But unfortunately, the most insecure place in Ogun State today is Yewaland due to these attacks,” he concluded.
