India’s Central Bureau of Investigation has charged as many as 51 people for attack on minister’s house in the northern state of Haryana during violent protests by the Jat community in 2016 in demand for reservation in government jobs.
“The CBI has filed a charge sheet in a court against 51 suspects for the attack on the home and office of Haryana minister Abhimanyu Singh in Rohtak town in February 2016.
Charges of rioting, sedition, attempt to murder and dacoity have been slapped on them,” an official said Tuesday.
Police said while some of the accused are currently in judicial custody, others are out on bail granted by a local court.
Some 30 people died and several injured when Jats clashed with security forces and other communities to demand for job quotas similar to those given to lower castes in India.
For days in 2016, there was unrest in Haryana as protesters burnt vehicles and shops of non-Jats.
Demonstrations were also held in the Indian capital and the northern states of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
No fewer than 10 million people in Delhi faced acute water crisis after the protesters sabotaged a key canal supplying water to the city.
The protests were called off after Jat leaders accepted a government offer.
