How I cope as a single parent – Salawa Abeni

When Waka Queen, Salawa Abeni, dropped her debut album dedicated to the late President Murtala Mohammed, under Decca Records in 1976, she was in her teens.
As a result of this, she quickly became the toast of the town as many people wondered about her musical artistry at that tender age, which was very uncommon then unlike now.
Shortly after that, a romance kicked off between her and her band leader, a development that was greeted with mixed reactions from the general public because she was still at her tender age.
But she was never deterred.
She soldiered on with her career and years after, she fell in love with another Fuji lord, Alhaji Kollinghton Ayinla.
God blessed the union with lovely children.
Unfortunately, the relationship later crashed and she has been left alone since then catering for her kids all by herself.
Abeni, in a recent interview, said that it has not been easy coping as a single mother.
According to her: “I don’t know how I have been doing it over the years but I will say Almighty Allah has been so good to me.
“When I left Alhaji Kolinghton Ayinla, my children were so young.
“Sherrif was just two years.
“Eskay was four and my late son was seven.
“It was so difficult but I thank God.
“It got to a stage that I couldn’t pay my children’s school fees.
“It was very tough but God was my helper.”
