Accreditation and voting commenced early in the Governorship and State assembly election across 4,104 polling units amid tight security in Adamawa.
Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria who monitored the exercise in Yola reports that electoral officers and election materials arrived most of the polling units at about 8:30 am.
The election was characterised by heavy presence of security agencies including the police, military and other security operatives.
About 12,312 police and 1,400 military personnel had been deployed to ensure peaceful conduct of the election in the state.
However, the exercise started amid low voter turnout in spite of heavy security presence in most areas visited.
Ahmed Boboi, a voter, in Jimeta, expressed happiness over the early commencement and smooth conduct of the exercise.
He said that although there was low voter turnout compared to the Feb. 25 Presidential and National Assembly election, voters would turn out en masse as the exercise progresses.
“The exercise started early and voters will come out in large numbers to exercise their franchise,” he said.
Mary Audu, another voter, said she had cast her vote, and commended INEC for ensuring good arrangements to facilitate smooth conduct of the exercise.
NAN reports that APC’s Sen. Aishatu Dahiru, the only female governorship candidate is contesting the election against Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
About 2,196.566 million registered voters are expected to vote in the election in the state.
