Four killed in Jigawa flood

The National Emergency Management Agency has confirmed that four people lost their lives in the flood that ravaged seven local government areas of Jigawa State.
Alhaji Musa Ilallah, NEMA’s Zonal Coordinator for the North West zone, confirmed the death of the victims after an assessment tour of the affected local government areas.
The coordinator, who made the disclosure on Wednesday in Dutse in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, said a team from NEMA had visited the area.
According to Illalah, the visit was to take stock of properties destroyed with a view to presenting relief materials to those displayed by the flood.
He said 3,115 people were affected, while 17,260 farmlands were destroyed by the flood.
He said the agency would soon distribute relief materials to alleviate the plight of the victims.
Ilallah appealed to the state government to increase funding of the State Emergency Management Agency and provide it with vehicles and other logistics to tackle flood.
Speaking when the coordinator paid him a courtesy call, Governor Muhammad Badaru faulted NEMA’s claim on the number of local government areas and farmlands ravaged by the flood.
The governor said the 27 local government areas in the state were submerged, while 223,000 farmlands were destroyed by the flood.
Badaru said the government provided water pumping machines to drain water in some local government areas to allow for vehicular and human movements.
Badaru said he had briefed NEMA’s Director-General, Muhammad Sani-Sidi, and President Muhammadu Buhari on the situation.
