The All Progressives Congress governorship candidates in Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Delta and Gombe State on Tuesday promised not to rest on their oars until they return their states to the APC.
The candidates – Umana Okon Umana (Akwa Ibom), Dakuku Peterside (Rivers), O’tega Emerhor (Delta) and Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe) – made the promise in Abuja, while addressing State House Correspondents after consulting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
The gubernatorial candidates said they were not daunted by the verdicts of the Supreme Court which affirmed the elections of their Peoples Democratic Party opponents.
Umana said his party was still reviewing the judgment, adding that there were two concurrent verdicts at the tribunal and Appeal Court, which ordered a re-run.
Peterside also said he had placed the Supreme Court verdict behind him and was focusing on the re-run polls for the three Senatorial, 12 House of Representatives and 22 State Assembly seats in the state.
He said all his party was asking for was a level playing field by the Independent National Electoral Commission and the security agencies.
He said: “Now we are going for elections and we believe that INEC will be impartial and that the security agencies will provide a conducive atmosphere for people to cast votes and the votes of the people will count.”
Peterside said the APC represents the dreams and aspirations of the Rivers State people and he was very confident the party would emerge victorious.
For Yahaya, the APC candidates came to share some ideas with the Vice President on the lessons learnt from the legal system.
He said chances were very high for the APC to clinch Gombe State in the next elections.
He said: “Everybody knows that Nigerians, particularly Northern Nigeria, has embraced change.
“Gombe is APC and will remain APC and we live to see in 2019 who will be there.”
Emerhor said after the Supreme Court verdicts, the candidates felt like coming to brief Osinbajo and determine the way forward for the party.
He said: “Politics is continuous.
“We thought we should review how the party is being repositioned and the judgments that were not favourable to us and the next thing that we need to do to be able to carry the party in our states.”
