Ferdinand: I just want one pro fight 

Rio Ferdinand has revealed his ambition in boxing stretches little further than having one fight.

The former Manchester United and England defender announced last month he is attempting to switch sports, having retired from football in May 2015.

Ferdinand, 38, had previously stated he was keen to challenge for a belt but has now admitted he does not see the move into boxing as something for the long term.

This is not a joke. Hopefully, I will get a licence, go on to become a professional and fight someone.

“I want to see if I can get a licence and become a professional and have one fight,” he told the BBC.

“I am not looking to have a career here. I am looking to have a professional fight and I will see where I go then.”

Despite admitting he is not looking to forge a new sporting career, Ferdinand was adamant his attempt to become a boxer is something he is taking seriously.

“This is not a joke,” he added. “Hopefully, I will get a licence, go on to become a professional and fight someone.

“Boxing can’t be a gimmick. If I take it lightly, I will get hurt.”
