FCTA raises committee to resettle Jabi-Yakubu community

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has constituted a Technical Committee for the resettlement of Jabi-Yakubu Community from its present abode to a new Resettlement Town at Shere-Galuyi in Bwari Area Council of the FCT.
The community, which comprises of about 500 households, had written to the Minister of State for the FCT, Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide, on March 5, 2013, requesting to be moved to the new resettlement town earmarked for them.
The Technical Committee is chaired by the Deputy Director of Planning and Resettlement in the Resettlement and Compensation Department, FCT, Helen Obiechina, while the Special Assistant (Legal) to the FCT Minister of State, Festus Tsavsar, is the Secretary of the Committee.
Other members include: Special Assistant (Resettlement Matters) to the FCT Minister of State, Benedict Ogenyi; representative of Urban and Regional Planning Department, Adamu Adamu; representative of Public Building Department, Ibrahim Momoh Jimoh; Head of Admin in the Resettlement and Compensation Department, Awwal Abdullahi Ibrahim; Security Chief, Abuja Municipal Area Council, Kelechi Uko-Abasi, and a representative of Satellite Towns Development Agency.
The Jabi-Yakubu Community has two representatives as members of the Committee.
They are: Chief of Jabi Yakubu, His Royal Highness, Yakubu Auta; and the Madaki of Jabi-Yakubu Community, Ishaku Suleiman.
Akinjide, who inaugurated the Technical Committee in Abuja, said the movement of Jabi-Yakubu Community to the new resettlement town was in line with the policy and programmes of the FCT Administration on resettlement matters.
She said: “The setting up of this Technical Team became imperative because of the willingness of the Jabi-Yakubu Community to move to the Shere-Galuyi Resettlement Town.
“The community identified environmental hazards and the need for expansion as reasons for the relocation request.”
She assured them that the Administration was committed to proffering a lasting solution to the problems that have hindered the success of the resettlement scheme.
“This has become imperative for the Administration to realise its dream of an environmentally functional and befitting world-class cityscape in accordance with the Master Plan provisions of Abuja,” the minister added.
She gave terms of reference for the 10-man committee as:
* To assess the Resettlement site (Jabi Yakubu designated area within Shere-Galuyi) with the view of knowing the areas that requires urgent action and the cost implication in order to facilitate immediate movement;
* To verify additional claims for plots allocation and recommend them for consideration;
* To effect immediate movement of the affected Community; and
* Any other matter that could assist the Administration in resettling the Jabi Yakubu and other affected Communities.
