Some residents of Abakpa Nike in Enugu State on Saturday bemoaned the sudden postponement of the country’s general elections, saying it will paralyse projections.
The residents, who spoke to News Agency of Nigeria in Enugu on Saturday, said people would find it difficult to go about their normal business for the day, since they had not planned ahead.
Ikechukwu Ogbonna, a resident, said the postponement was sudden, coming when people had already zeroed their minds on alternative activities.
Ogbonna said: “All have put their minds in going for the election and now that the elections have been postponed, we are all disappointed that we cannot meet up with our daily activities.
“This election should have been the easiest of all the elections in the country as the two major candidates are from the same tribe.”
In his reaction, Ibeabuchi Onovo, a student of the Institution of Management and Technology and resident in Abakpa, said the postponement should have come earlier.
Onovo said: “Well, INEC knows the best as they have not given us the reasons for their action.
“We are ready to vote but I could not believe that the election has been postponed even when I heard it on the air.
“After months of strike by the school authority, the students are now facing postponement of elections.
“We are wasting at home instead of being in school and may be ending an academic session, we are hearing one story to another, thereby delaying our academic activities.”
Other residents, who spoke on the matter, but would not want their names in print, equally expressed disappointment in the suddenness.
Two of them said the postponement had cast aspersion on the process and was likely to discourage people from participating in future polls.
They said for the years they have been voting in elections, their votes had not counted, and there were indications to believe so much deceit at play in the process.
NAN reports that the Presidential and National Assembly election had been postponed to February 23 while the governorship and House of Assembly polls were shifted till March 9, 2019.
