The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, led the Technical Session of the Two- Day Extra-Ordinary Meeting of the National Council of Sports held at the Media Centre of the Abuja National Stadium, Abuja to kick start the meeting that would be rounded off on Tuesday.
The Minister of Sports Mand Chairman, National Sports Commission, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, will preside over the Extra-Ordinary Meeting of the National Council on Sports at the Media Centre, Package A of the National Stadium, Abuja on Tuesday.
Elegbeleye, in his opening address, set the tone for the agenda of the two-day meeting.
He said: “As you are all aware, the Technical Session is a prelude to the National Council on Sports meeting.
“The session is responsible for deliberating on memos, progress reports and other issues relating to sports development in Nigeria.”
He also stated that he was informed that the last meeting, held in Ilorin, Kwara State, endorsed the introduction of the National Youth Games and the opening up of the National Sports Festival to all Nigerians.
Elegbeleye added: “I am pleased to note that the 1st Edition of the National Youth Games was successfully concluded on Saturday, the 14th of December, 2013, with over 3,000 athletes from 33 states of the Federation and the FCT participating.
“Unfortunately, Edo, Jigawa, Lagos and Zamfara States did not participate.”
He, however, noted that the Committee set up to look at the modalities for the organisation of the National Sports Festival has since
submitted its Report to the Sports Minister.
Elegbeleye concluded by saying that among the things to be discussed and considered at the Technical Session are the draft copy of the reviewed Festival Rules, the Date for the Festival and recommend same to Council for approval.
Tuesday’s Council meeting is expected to commence at 9.30am after the arrival of Abdullahi and Elegbeleye.
Also expected at the meeting are states directors of sports, directors from the NSC, representative of the International Olympic Committee and states commissioners of sports.
