An Ado-Ekiti Customary Court on Friday dissolved a seven-year-old union of a native doctor on grounds of adultery, public disgrace and lack of love.
The dissolution followed a petition by the native doctor, Chief Kayode Adekunmola, who said that his wife, Mojisola, was adulterous and never loved him.
Fifty-year-old Kayode, a resident of Ado-Ekiti, told the court that Mojisola also regularly disgraced him in public, including in the palace of the Ewi of Ado.
He submitted that Mojisola engaged in extramarital affairs in spite of his efforts to stop her from the act.
Kayode prayed the court to dissolve the union and grant him the custody of the only child of the union.
However, Mojisola, 37, told the court that she was not married to Kayode but only had an affair with him which produced the five-year-old child.
She submitted that the affair began in 2011.
The respondent denied all the allegations against her by Kayode.
She said: “It is not true that I disgrace him publicly; he does not visit me regularly but makes all sorts of allegations against me based on rumours.”
Mojisola prayed the court to grant her the custody of the child, saying that Kayode would not be able to take care of the female child.
The President of the court, Joseph Ogunsemi, held that the union was beyond redemption, and consequently dissolved it.
He awarded custody of the child to the respondent and ordered the petitioner to pay N5, 000 monthly for the child’s upkeep.
The president also ordered Kayode’s unrestricted access to his daughter.
