The Action Congress of Nigeria, Ekiti State chapter, has carpeted the National Chairman of the newly floated Unity Party of Nigeria, Dr. Fredrick Fasehun, over his criticism of the removal of Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele as the Chairman of the Ekiti State Caucus in the House of Representatives by his colleagues.
Fasehun, who is also the founder of the Oodua Peoples’ Congress, had in a statement faulted Opeyemi’s removal and asked the leadership of the ACN to guarantee the safety of the House of Representatives member.
The ACN, in a statement by its Director of Publicity, Segun Dipe, however, asked Fasehun, who it described as an agent of the Presidency, to stay clear of the internal activities of the party.
Saying that ACN has its own process for nominating candidates for election, the party said Fasehun, who is not a member of the party cannot fault a process that he knows nothing about.
The statement stressed that Fasehun cannot lay claim to be a stakeholder in ACN, hence cannot talk about abuse of internal democracy in the party, adding that neither him nor Opeyemi, alleged to be his co-traveller in the “Presidency plot”, can undo the endorsement of Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State for a second term by the state and national leaders of the party.
“We know the antecedence of both Fasehun and Opeyemi as opportunistic politicians and crumb-eaters from the Abuja table and they should stop fooling members of the public with their fake progressive claims,” the statement added.
The ACN statement reads: “We find it curious that Fasehun who has degenerated to the level of crumb eaters at the Abuja table would want to dictate the dimension of internal workings of the ACN, just because one of his co-travellers in the “Presidency Plot” to undermine the party was removed as chairman of the Ekiti caucus in the House of Representatives by his colleagues.
“We are not surprised that Dr Fasehun is crying more than the bereaved, as both himself and Opeyemi are tools in the hands of the Presidency in a plot that has failed before it was hatched.
“The general public is not fooled by their fake progressive claims and they will do well to stop masquerading as progressives when it is now a common knowledge that they are crumb-eaters from the Abuja table.
“ACN is a democratic party and there are processes for nominating candidates for election. Fasehun is not a member of the party and cannot lay claim to be a stakeholder in the party to talk about internal democracy.
“Why did he not complain about internal democracy when his ‘boy’ Ope was given the House of Representatives ticket which he did not contest for?
“We hope Fasehun and his cohorts will mind their business and not meddle with internal issues within ACN.
“If Mr Bamidele is a democrat and a genuine member of ACN, then he should also know that it is anti-democratic to force himself on his colleagues whose opposition to his leadership of their caucus has been expressly stated.
“No one, to the best of the party’s knowledge is preventing Bamidele from pursuing his ambition. He is well within his right to do so, but he should also know that members of the party reserve the right to reach their own decision on his ambition.”
