Mathew Iduoriyekemwen, an aspirant in the June 20 Edo State governorship primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party, has been suspended by the party in the state.
Iduoriyekemwen’s suspension was contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Benin by the Publicity Secretary of the party, Chris Nehikhare.
The statement said the former state lawmaker was suspended for a month for engaging in anti-party activities.
It said Iduoriyekemwen was expected to face a disciplinary committee set up by the state chapter of PDP within the period.
It said the party had recommended similar action to the national leadership of the party to be meted on the member representing Egor/Ikpobha-Okha Federal Constituency, Rep. Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma.
Iduoriyekenmwn had rejected the primaries conducted on Monday and gone to obtain another form to participate in the primaries scheduled for Wednesday by the Ali Modu Sheriff-led PDP.
The PDP faction, which is opposed to the Sheriff faction, said in the statement on Sunday: “With the successful completion of the primary, the Party immediately activated its post primary conflict resolution mechanism by reaching out to the losers of the election.
“This is in order to assuage their loss in the democratic contest.
“Inasmuch as we tried, we discovered that one of the aspirants was adamant in working against the tenets of our party.
“His behaviour and utterances immediately after his loss have become, not only embarrassing to the party but also to the vast majority of Edo people.
“He has teamed up with the embattled former national chairman of our party and even gone ahead to purchase a nomination form for the same governorship slot which he lost just a few days ago.
“His behaviour is unacceptable, irresponsible and selfish.
“This conduct is not surprising as the State Working Committee has uncovered his unholy alliance with the Governor Adams Oshiomhole-led government of Edo State to destabilise Edo PDP.
“The committee has resolved that all members of the party are enjoined to disregard the antics of Alhaji Modu Sheriff and Iduoriyekemwen in their desperate attempt to discredit the outcome of the governorship primary.
“The conduct of Iduoriyekemwen in associating with Alhaji Modu Sheriff with the intention to destabilize the party in the state amounts to anti-party activity.
“Consequently, Iduoriyekemwen is hereby suspended from the party for one month, pending further disciplinary action in accordance with chapter 10 of the Peoples Democratic Party Constitution of 2012 (as amended).
“Iduoriyekemwen was also suspended for associating with Sheriff with the intention to destabilise the party in the state.”
The statement urged all party members appointed into the caretaker committee announced by Sheriff to ignore the appointment and stay away from the committee.
The Sheriff-led national executive of PDP on Saturday sacked the Edo State executive of the party and constituted a committee to oversee the affairs of the party in Edo.
