The President, Directors’ Guild of Nigeria (DGN), Victor Okhai, Monday said that the guild would build professionals through capacity building.
The re-elected President, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said his first tenure was a time to understand how the industry operates, even though he had always been a member of the guild.
Okhai was reelected as president of DGN during the guild’s national convention in Benin, held between July 13 and July 15.
Okhai said that the guild was positioned to make sure directors were relevant and also to compete on international standards.
“It is for us to be able to make sure that members are optimal. Gone are the days where only actors are recognised in the movie industry.
“In this my second term, my focus is to look at the welfare of our members. We’re looking at making the guild more professional with capacity building.
“We are having discussions with our colleagues from other parts of the world. We have opened up regions and discuss with the guild in America so that we can share ideas.
“We’re trying to see how we can build the capacity of our members and also discussing with film schools and universities in the U.S. We’re trying to see how members can come for training or bring in resource persons to train our members,” he said.
Okhai said the relationship between directors and other crew members was important and that the guild would restore the dignity of the directors to make sure they are well respected.
The DGN president added that the guild in its effort to build professionals was also making sure that members’ welfare is prioritised.

“I mentioned earlier that members’ welfare is very important and dear to my heart. Many people in their youthful age do so much so we are having discussions with the insurance so that members can have something to fall back on incase of death, accidents or retirement,” he said.
He added that the DGN was also in talks with the Pan Atlantic University to teach members how to manage the business aspect of their craft.
