The alleged murder of one Chief Bendoff Odumosor after withdrawing N2.5 million from his Ecobank corporate account by men of the Delta State Police Command on January 8, 2013, has assumed a new dimension.
The victim was arrested by a team of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, led by Sergeant Julius Robinson, with his fairly used Toyota Fore-Runner Jeep, with registration number ABN415AA on December 30, 2012.
How Odumosor mysteriously died in custody and was buried without a notice to the Odumosor family of Umudem Quarters, Beneku village in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of the state, has caused trouble.
His kinsmen, via their lawyer, Choice U. Umode & Co (Divine Chambers), want Sergeant Julius Robinson and Hon. Friday Osanebi, a member of the state’s House of Assembly, to explain.
A petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, called on the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 5, Benin, Edo State, to investigate the conducts of the Criminal Investigation Department in the state in the matter.
According to the petition, the department “orchestrated plots to extra judicially murder the person of Chief Beedoff Odumosor and buried him.”
The familyy said the claim by the police that the victim died on December 30, 2013 and was buried without Odumosor family’s notice to identify the corpse or same released to them for burial, was merely fabricated.
The family wondered why the police prevented all members of his family from seeing him until his first counsel went to obtain an injunction from the Federal High Court, Asaba, ordering the Commissioner of Police to produce Odumosor in court within 48 hours last year.
The matter assumed a dangerous dimension on Sunday following the alarm raised by the family’s counsel, alleging that anonymous callers have threatened his life to withdraw from the case.
“Each time I try to know the identity of the callers, they switch off their phones and sometimes, they call me with unknown number,” he complained.
He called on the Inspector General of Police and the general public to know that should anything happen to him, it should be linked with the case against the police in Delta State.
But the police in a counter affidavit maintained that it was acting on the allegations made by Hon. Osamebi that the victim fomented troubles during the 2011 election in his capacity as the Chairman of Ward 4 of Ndokwa East Local Government Area of the Peoples Democratic Party.
