The decision of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission to ccncel the recently conducted local government election in Jat Ward in Langtang North Local Government Area is threatening the peace of the area.
The Jat Youths Vanguard has said it is an attempt to disenfranchise their community Consequently, the Jat Youth Vanguard is calling on PLASIEC and the Plateau State Government to officially declare Hon. Nanmwa Kumzhi as the duly elected chairman of Langtang North LGC and Hon. Nanman Amos of the All Progressives Grand Alliance as the duly elected councillor for Jat Ward in the interest of peace, harmony, unity and progress of the Tarok nation.
The Chairman of Jat Youths Vanguard, Chief Nanyah Andrew Daman, described as unpatriotic the calls being made by some Nigerians on the need for PLASIEC to cancel or have a re-run of the LG election in Jat Ward.
According to Daman, Jat youths want the results of the Jat Ward, where the Peoples Democratic Party chairmanship candidate, Hon. Nanmwa Godwin Kumzhi, came tops, while the APGA councilorship candidate, Nanmwa Amos, won, to be announced without further delay as a court of competent jurisdiction has asked PLASIEC to so do while the substantive suit was adjourned to March 6, 2014 for hearing.
He added that the Jat Youths Vanguard posits that the electoral materials for the February 25, 2014 LG election arrived most of the Jat Ward polling units at about 1:30pm, with the voting going on till 9pm.
The group further explained that because of the lateness of the arrival of electoral materials and lateness in voting, the results of Jat Ward got to the collation centre at the Langtang LGC secretariat late.
At the Langtang North LGC secretariat gate, the thugs of the rival Democratic Peoples Party, wielding dangerous weapons, chased the electoral officials away, with the threat of killing them if they should come close to the secretariat.
Thus, for fear of their lives, the electoral officials took the collated results to the Jos headquarters of PLASIEC, with adequate explanations.
When the entire results were collated, Kumzhi won.
Daman said the Jat Youths Vanguard also commends PLASIEC and the Plateau State Government for organizing a peaceful, credible and fair LG election in the state despite the fear and misgivings of mischief makers.
