The Ebonyi State Government has ordered the closure of all motor parks within Abakaliki metropolis with effect from midnight of Friday (today).
The order is a follow up to the ban on movement of commuters to and from the State as a check against Coronavirus Disease, starting from Saturday.
Governor David Umahi announced this when he led the State medical team on a sensitisation and awareness tour through major business outfits, hotels and motor parks within Abakaliki.
The Governor directed that loading and off-loading of passengers for all commercial vehicles, including those owned by private companies, would, from tomorrow, be done at the Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, Abakaliki.
Umahi explained that the relocation of transport buses and cars to the stadium has become necessary in order to take advantage of the large space to forestall against park congestions capable of aiding the spread of COVID-19.
He further reiterated that only buses, cars and passengers travelling within the State would be allowed to operate in consonance with the ban on movement to and from the State until the COVID-19 scare is over.
Umahi’ said: “All motor parks are to be sealed by 12 midnight today.
“From tomorrow, loading will be done at the stadium.
“Every passenger must have a face mask or handkerchief to cover his nose and mouth, while all transport vehicles are to reduce the number of passengers per seat.”
Governor Umahi further revealed that his administration would, after now, construct a general motor park for all categories of transporters at a large open space opposite the Ebonyi International Market as a measure of decongesting the town centre.
Meanwhile, the Governor has instructed the Management of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki to suspend releasing of corpses to their owners for burial in the State for the meantime.
The directive was to add strength to the ban on social gathering of over 50 persons at a time as well as favour the maintenance of the minimum required social distancing strategy against the virus.
Umahi reiterated that any person or group of persons who in defiance of the orders is found engaging in any social event: weddings, burials, among others, should be arrested by security agencies and punished accordingly.
Managers of the various outfits visited, including Peace Motor Park, Octavia Pharmacy, Roban Stores and Osborne La Palm Hotel, expressed delight over the Governor’s action.
They promised to boost the existing measures already put in place in their various outfits towards ensuring that the State is free from the deadly pandemic.
