The Catholic Archdiocese of Jos and the Jamma’atu Nasir Islam in Plateau State have decried what they termed the lackadaisical attitude of the Federal Government to the sufferings of Nigerians.
The two religious bodies and ethnic/community leaders at a meeting jointly chaired by Prof Cletus Gotan, who represented Arch Bishop Ignitus Kaigama, and Alhaji Yusuf Sarumi of Jamma’atu Nasir Islam, therefore appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to settle the salaries of civil servants and allowances of pensioners to enable them take care of their families.
The meeting was held on Thursday in Jos, the Plateau State capital, at the Dialogue, Reconciliation and Peace Centre, Kwang, Jos South Local Government Area.
A communiqué issue at the end of the meeting appealed to the present administration to come to the aid of Nigerians suffering due to economic hardship.
The communique said: “We call on both state and federal government to try and reduce the hardship on the citizens by paying the salaries and pension of civil servants, especially school teachers. This is because civil servants are not only bread winners but also have many dependants to care for.”
The group also observed that the current grazing reserve bill before the National Assembly should be debated with caution
It said: “We observe that the issue of grazing reserve is a very sensitive issue among our communities. We need to do our best to first douse tension and urge our members to apply caution in our comments and actions.”
It charged the government to find a way of resolving the grazing reserve issue without creating further tension, adding: “We also call on the government to resolve this issue amicably and also engage all stakeholders in the dialogue.”
The religious and community leaders pleaded with Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State to rebuild the burnt Jos Main Market to enable the government generate revenue from the market
It added: “We also urge the government to also try and fulfill its promise of rebuilding the burnt main market so as to boost economic activities in the State. This is because the continuous closure of the market is causing untold hardship to citizens.”
