The Chairman of Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, Dr. Samuel Adedayo, has advocated for the creation of community policing to check rising incidence of terrorism and gang wars in the community.
According to Adebayo, the introduction of community policing would be complimentary to the constitutionally recognized Police Force.
Adedayo, who raised the observation in a welcome address at the official commissioning of the Orile-Iganmu Police Station, disclosed that some gangs of misguided youths in concert with mercenaries from outside the council area used to unleash terror on hapless residents in some parts of the council area.
He identified the affected areas of attacks as Oke-Oja; Badia Bohlla, near Zion area of Sari Iganmu in ward “B”.
The council boss asserted that a public health centre located at Oke-Oke was forced to close down as it was attacked by the hoodlums.
But for the timely intervention of operatives of OP-MESA, a military patrol team, and the police, the mayhem would have assumed a more frightening dimension, Adebayo said.
Stressing the need to make the community uninhabitable for undesirable elements, the council boss emphasised that there was a dire need for a more radical approach to checkmate the rising incidence.
While commending the efforts of the Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola-led administration in terms of support to security, Adedayo said that the governor has done more for the welfare of men and officers of the Lagos State Police Command to ensure that Lagosians could sleep with their two eyes closed.
While proffering solution to the rising insurgence of the Boko Haram sect, he said: “If the Federal government can borrow a leaf from the Babatunde Raji Fashola-led administration in terms of funding and support to security agencies in Lagos, it is most likely that Nigeria will not experience her present travails in the hands of Boko Haram sect.”
Also speaking at the occasion, the Ojora of Ijora Kingdom, HRM Abdulfatai Oyeyinka Aromire, urged residents to be law abiding and cooperate with the law enforcement agencies by providing them with useful information about criminal activities in their community.
While describing the newly commissioned police station as unique and first of its kind in Africa, the monarch appealed to the state government to provide it with more patrol vehicles, just as he called on the State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, to deploy more men to the division.
