Cameroon Football Federation rejects Eto’o’s resignation

Despite the team’s exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) rejected Samuel Eto’o’s resignation as president.

Legendary African footballer Eto’o offered his resignation at an executive committee meeting in Yaounde on Monday.

The meeting, conducted to assess Cameroon’s performance at the continental tournament, witnessed Eto’o’s gesture of stepping down, urging other members of the board to follow suit “in good faith”.

In an official statement released following the meeting, FECAFOOT affirmed its stance: “The Executive Committee of the Cameroon Football Federation convened on Monday, February 5, at the Yaounde Hilton Hotel. 

“The agenda centered on assessing the senior men’s national team’s performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

“After extensive discussions and deliberations, the Executive Committee unanimously opted to retain their current mandates, thereby rejecting the President’s resignation. 

“This decision reflects the committee’s renewed confidence in him to continue fostering the reconstruction and development of Cameroonian football across all levels, in line with the plan endorsed by the elective General Assembly on December 11, 2021.”

The decision to maintain confidence in Eto’o comes amidst a backdrop of intense scrutiny and allegations surrounding his tenure.

Serious accusations ranging from improper conduct to match-fixing and corruption have emerged, casting shadows over FECAFOOT’s administration.

Eto’o, who assumed the presidency of FECAFOOT in December 2021, has been a pivotal figure in Cameroon’s footballing landscape, having led the national team to significant achievements, including a bronze medal in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
