Rasmane Ouedraogo of Burkina Faso, who kept a low profile at various stages of the four-stage race, on Monday re-emerged the overall champion of the 3rd ECOWAS Cycling Race.
Ouedraogo was the overall champion of the 2nd edition in 2011.
The race, which commenced on November 13 in Lagos, Nigeria, terminated in front of the Palais De Sport, Abidjan, Cote d’ Ivoire, on November 18.
Ouedraogo, who claimed to have deployed a new tactics, had stayed in background, but ensuring a finish among the top five in each stage.
He mustered enough points to re-emerge the overall winner of the competition.
Ouedraogo, however, waited until the final stage – Aboisso-Abidjan – to cap up with a sprint finish of the last stage, notching up cumulative 30 points.
He was followed by Isiaka Fofana of Cote d’ Ivoire, who placed the overall second with 27 points, while Abdoul Aziz Nikiema of Burkina Faso turned in 25 points to place overall third.
Nigeria’s Bassey Nelson Okon, who put up impressive showing during the race, winning in some of the intermediate sprint events, was placed fourth with cumulate 23 points.
A Senegalese, Oumar Gueye, placed fifth with 21 points while another Nigerian, Ajibade Qodir, with 19 points, was placed sixth.
In the general sprints classification overall, a Nigerian, Kaleb Kalizibe, emerged in the second sport with nine points behind Nikiema of Burkina Faso with 17 points.
Two other Nigerians, who had vastly improved in the just-concluded edition, Qodir, with three points, and Okon with two, emerged among the 15 sprint finishers in the race.
