Usain Bolt could be making a return to Birmingham next summer along with the Jamaican athletics team to warm up for the world athletics championships.
And they could be joined by members of Team USA in a repeat of the 2012 London Olympic training camps held here.
The 2017 IAAF World Championship is due to be held at London’s Olympic Stadium in August 2017 so both teams are said to be keen to return to their training camps in Birmingham.
The Americans are in talks with the city council over Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr and the Jamaicans to the University of Birmingham’s Edgbaston campus and both teams have confirmed they wish to return.
So impressed was Usain Bolt with the welcome and quality of facilities here that he thanked Birmingham in his first interview immediately after winning the 200m gold medal in 2012.
Americans picked up 13 gold medals on the track and field in the Rio Olympics last month, whilst Jamaica secured six, so many of those star athletes could be in Birmingham next year.
Council deputy leader Ian Ward said: “Welcoming USA Track and Field and Team Jamaica ahead of the London Olympic Games in 2012 was a fantastic boost for Birmingham, so it would be great to see them return ahead of next year’s IAAF World Championships.”
