Arsenal’s Champions League campaign has ended in a valiant 1-1 draw with holders Bayern Munich, with the European champions sealing a quarter-final place with a 3-1 aggregate victory at the Allianz Arena.
Having slumped to a 2-0 first leg defeat at the Emirates, Arsene Wenger admitted his side’s task of overturning the score was ‘impossible’, but the Gunners went out with a bow following a gutsy performance in the German capital.
Bayern dominated the opening-half but failed to find a way past stand-in stopper Lukasz Fabianski, who started in place of the suspended Wojciech Szczesny. following his sending off in the first leg.
The Gunners were brighter after the break but their hopes of a miraculous comeback were shattered when Bastian Schweinsteiger struck after 54 minutes.
And while Lukas Podolski hammered in an unlikely equaliser three minutes later, the two-goal deficit proved too high an obstacle to overcome.
