Despite the promises made by the Publisher and Chairman of Thisday newspaper, Nduka Obaigbena, to pay all outstnading salaries and other outstanding debts latest by Friday next week, the workers of the company are insisting on the continuation of the shut down of the company.
After a meeting with Obaigbena, who is attending the Fashion Show put together by his company on Victoria Island, Lagos, the National Union of Paper, Publishing Practitioners Workers of Nigeria told the workers of the company about the outcome.
Obaigbena, at the meeting, promised to pay the eight months outstanding salaries, remit the funds that have been deducted from salaries of staff to the cooperative society and review the conditions of service.
But the workers, who belong in the main to NUPPROW, are insisting that they cannot return to work without receiving their salaries.
At the meeting, Obaigbena was said to have told the national leadership of NUPPROW that he cannot afford to pay any salary today.
When the union threatened to originate a suit against him, Obaigbena was reported to have told them that he was also going to sue the Federal Government then as it was owing him for advertisements placed in the newspaper.
He was reported to have specifically referred to an outstnading payment for a wrap around placed by the Federal Government in the newspaper.
Obaigbena, who agreed with the union on all the issues raised, promised to pay if given the required time.
As at the time of filing this report, the workers of Thisday were still in a meeting with the leadership of NUPPROW as the company still remains shut.
