Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State has lauded the effort of President Goodluck Jonathan for ensuring the commencement of work on the deplorable East-West Road in the South South region of the country suspended sometime ago due to paucity of funds.
Akpabio, who answered questions from Government House correspondents in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital, on Saturday after returning from exploratory mission overseas commended the Ministry of Niger Delta and Niger Delta Development Commission for keeping faith with the road by making a yearly budgetary allocation for its construction.
He acknowledged the economic importance of the road to the South South indeed to the entire country and assured that with the sub contracting of the road to different companies, the job would be completed soon.
He said: “How much was budgeted for the road by the National Assembly?
“I thank the ministry for always budgeting for the road on a yearly basis.
“At the moment, there is increased tempo of work on the road.
“I urge NDDC and contractors to continue with the space of work.”
Akpabio hinted that while in London, the United Kingdom, he attended several meetings aimed at bringing investors to establish fertilizer plants and develop Ibaka Deep Seaport, among others in Akwa Ibom State.
He expressed the hope that soon the result would show.
Commenting on the activities of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, which has recently come under media attacks, Akpabio said the forum was principally an interactive one.
He said the stability of democracy in the country was uppermost its agenda.
Apart from supporting the Federal Government led by President Jonathan, the governor remarked that the forum helps in deepening democracy, ensuring good governance, tackling the challenges of security, decayed infrastructure and Peer Review Mechanism, among others.
