The next Africa Cup of Nations match scheduled to be played at the Olembe Stadium in Cameroon will be moved to another venue after a crush outside the ground on Monday killed at least eight people and injured dozens more.
The President of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, called for an immediate investigation into the disaster.
Motsepe said it was caused by “inexplicable reasons”.
The tragedy occurred on Monday as fans struggled to get access to a match between the hosts and Comoros in Yaounde.
The stadium was scheduled to host a further three knockout matches, including the showpiece final on February 6.
But Motsepe said at an emergency press conference on Tuesday that at least the next match due to take place at the venue will be moved.
“The game on Sunday will not take place, it will take place at Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo, which is here in Yaounde,” he said.
“In the interim, the match which is supposed to take place will not take place until there is a thorough report into the circumstances which led to people being injured and losing their lives, and a guarantee that corrective measures have taken place to makes sure that the remaining matches are played in a place of safety and health.”
Motsepe said that “failures” were to blame for the disaster.
He said: “There were deficiencies. Clearly, there were failures. There were weaknesses. There were things that should have been foreseen.
“You take preventative measures, that if certain things happen those will ameliorate the circumstances which will lead to serious injuries and even loss of life.”
