The Action Congress of Nigeria has urged the state command of the Nigeria Police to conduct a thorough investigation into recent claims by a former Governor of the state and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ayo Fayose, that his car was shot at by suspected hoodlums in an assassination attempt in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday.
The former governor, through a press statement by his campaign organisation, had given details of how the alleged attack was carried out.
The ACN, however, faulted Fayose’s claims, describing it as suspicious.
The party maintained that the present administration in the state had invested hugely in security, thereby making the state one of the safest in the country.
It therefore called on the police authorities in the state to invite Fayose to substantiate the assassination claims with a view to allowing them carry out a proper investigation into the matter.
The party, in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Tunde Adeleke, wondered why Fayose did not report the alleged attack to the police authorities in the state, instead of going to the press.
Adeleke said in the statement: “One would have thought that the most reasonable thing to do would be for Fayose to report the alleged attack to the police for necessary investigation. The Police authorities in the state have said it was not aware of any attack since no report has been made. We therefore urge the police to invite the former governor to substantiate the claims in order to help them carry out a proper investigation.”
The ACN added that a thorough investigation into the claim becomes even more imperative giving the fact that the present administration takes the security of life and properties of every citizen seriously, a development which it said had reduced violence and insecurity in the state to the barest minimum.
The ACN said: “Knowing Mr. Fayose’s antecedents and his capacity for mischief, it is important for the police to get to the roots of the matter with a view to establishing the truth. This claim by Mr. Fayose should not be ignored.
"It is on record that the state has been peaceful in the last two and a half years that the present administration has been in place, hence claims of such close shave with death, if true indeed, should be properly investigated.
"The investigation will also help to discourage those who would like to hide under such spurious claims to introduce a violent dimension to politics in the state as well as those who would like to capitalise on such claims to perpetrate acts of violence and brigandage for which they are well noted.
"We are not unmindful of massive killings and maiming of innocent citizens under the PDP-led administration, a development which has changed under this administration. We therefore call on the police and other relevant security agencies in the state to do everything possible to discourage any direct and indirect introduction of violence to the politics of the state, by remaining vigilant and carrying out thorough investigation of cases of violence and bringing culprits to book
