The Federal Government has been called upon to step up strategies and formulate policies that will encourage and strengthen the Nigerian Police Force to withstand the current security of challenges in the country.
The Plateau State Governor, Da Jonah Jang, at the pull out ceremony for the outgone Commissioner of Police in Plateau State, Chris Olakpe, stressed the need for the centralization of the Nigeria Police.
Speaking through the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Shedrack Best, Jang said the police remains the hope of the common man and can only be effective if the institution is better funded.
He expressed government’s desire to work closely with Olakpe, stressing that he had demonstrated his professionalism and was skillful in responding to the security of the state promptly while serving the state.
The outgone Commissioner of Police, while addressing the gathering at the pullout, appealed to the people to remain calm over the recent twin bomb blasts in the state, describing it as unfortunate.
Olakpe said though the blast almost shook the foundation of peace he worked to establish, several arrests have so far been made and that the incident would not upturn the calm that had returned to the state.
The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, said Olakpe was leaving the force when his services are most needed and appealed to him to continue to lend advice that will help the force to grow.
Abubakar, who was represented by the DIG Zone 4, Suleiman Fakai, tasked the people to have confidence in the police by feeding them with all the necessary information to nip crime in the bud.
He also advised youths to shun social vices and avoid drug addiction.
He urged government to draw from the well of experience of outgoing Commissioner of Police, who served his country in various capacities.
