Out of favour Super Eagles’ striker, Ikechukwu Uche, was the hero and the villain as Villarreal were denied an outright win over Real Betis in the Spanish league on Sunday.
Ruben Castro’s late goal gave bottom side, Real Betis, a 1-1 draw at 10-man Villarreal in the Spanish league on Sunday.
Villarreal appeared to be in control after Bruno Soriano converted a penalty in the 71st minute following Francisco Chica’s foul on Ikechukwu Uche in the area.
But Uche was dismissed with his second booking in the 85th, and five minutes later Castro headed home Didac Vila’s cross to level.
Both goalkeepers saved their teams late.
Betis’ Adan Garrido denied Giovani Dos Santos in a one-on-one in the 89th before Sergio Asenjo blocked Alfred Ndiaye’s point-blank header in injury time.
The draw left Villarreal in fifth place, six points from fourth and the final Champions League spot.
Betis was left 11 points from safety.
