Commercial activities were on Monday paralysed in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, as students of the state-owned polytechnic took to the streets in protest at the shooting of their colleague.
Eyewitnesses said the incident happened around 2pm when a policeman attached to a bullion van shot at the student who was in a cab heading to the main campus of the institution.
The student, Ahmed Dayo, was said to have sustained serious injuries as a result of the gunshot.
The eyewitness told NAN that the wounded student, an ND 1 Accounting student, was going to the campus to collect his identity card.
NAN gathered that the taxi driver had stopped to pick another passenger when the policeman in the bullion van ordered him to move off the road.
The eyewitness said the policeman attempted to shoot the tyre of the taxi, but instead shot the student inside the taxi cab.
The policemen and the driver of the bullion van were said to have fled to a nearby bank to seek refuge, further infuriating the students around the scene of the incident.
NAN also gathered that the students set up a bonfire on the busy road, disrupting human and vehicular movement.
All shops, offices and banks on the long stretch of Murtala Mohammed Road were hurriedly shut while traders in the area fled.
The student was rushed to the nearby Ayodele Medical Centre where he was attended to.
NAN gathered that the student suffered a broken bone on his left leg while the tibia was broken, affecting the flat surface of his right foot.
He was referred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital for full medical attention after being given first aid treatment.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state command, Femi Famubode, confirmed the incident.
Famubode added that a detachment of policemen was drafted to the scene to restore normalcy.
