Priscilla Orji, a nutritionist, says people should take 80 per cent of food that has alkaline and 20 per cent of food with acidic content.
Orji told the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Jos, Plateau State that fruits and vegetables were alkaline in nature, while other foods were acidic in nature.
She said most people consume fruits and vegetables, but not in the required proportion.
Orji said: “We have fruits and vegetables available, but how many of us can sustain the proportion we are supposed to be taking.”
She advised Nigerians to imbibe the habit of taking food supplements to help augment intake of 80 per cent alkaline.
She explained that people who inculcate the habit of taking 80 per cent of fruits and vegetables were usually healthy, as it helped in boosting their immune system and it detoxify the body of free radicals that could cause cancers.
According to Orji, the act also helps in ensuring that the system is oxygenated, where there is oxygen, no disease can thrive there.
She recommended food supplements that are all organic in nature and beneficial to the body as most people find it difficult to inculcate the act of taking fruits and vegetable in the right proportion.
According to Orji, this helps in balancing the alkaline and acidic content of the body.
