Victor Anichebe said he burst into tears when he was told he will be out injured until the middle of April.
The Sunderland striker is set to miss at least 10 games after damaging ligaments in his right knee in a tackle with West Brom midfielder, Claudio Yacob.
Anichebe said: “I don’t usually cry, but this has been a really hard one to take.
“To say I’m gutted is a complete understatement and this is probably the worst I’ve felt since I suffered a bad injury back in 2009.”
Anichebe has scored three times in nine starts since joining as a free agent in the summer.
His goals came during a spell of four wins in seven games before Christmas that raised hopes of another escape from relegation to prolong Sunderland’s 10-year stay in the top flight.
But the Black Cats are back at the bottom, three points from safety, after failing to win in their last seven games.
Anichebe added: “Just when I was getting back to my best, something like this happens.
“Now I just have to try to stay as positive as I can, and do the work needed to come back even stronger.
“It may feel like everything is going against us, but I believe and have complete faith that we will improve and pick up the results needed to get us out of the position we find ourselves in.”
