A Nigerian national amputee football player, Izuchukwu Nwachukwu, has moved on to play professional football in Turkey.
Gbenga Dosumu, Assistant Coach with the Nigeria Amputee Football Federation, disclosed on Wednesday.
Dosunmu told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that Nwachukwu has signed up for Turkish Amputee Football Club, Istanbul Ozurluler, Kulubu.
He told NAN that Nwachukwu, a midfielder, left the country in October and is currently taking part in country’s amputee football league.
He said the dearth of activities in the body had left some of the footballers frustrated, making them to seek greener pastures outside the country.
Dosunmu said: “This is making two good national players that we have lost to other countries in the last two years, and it is as a result of lack of competitions.
“Nwachukwu had to personally take the bull by the horn because he really wants to better his football career and earn a livelihood abroad which was not forthcoming here.
“There are no activities for a very long time now, and this is disheartening because these players go the extra mile to train, yet no there are no competition to encourage them.”
The coach described Nwachukwu’s move as a good step in the right direction, adding that the movement to Turkey would create an enabling environment for him to gain adequate exposure.
He said: “It was through self effort and determination that his relocation was made possible and I am really happy for him because he is a very good player and has bright future.
“He has started well by identifying with a club and even playing in the ongoing league, his allowances and wages are guaranteed to take care of personal needs.”
According to Dosunmu, the footballer, also a graduate of Imo State University, represented the country in 2008 at the Cup of Nations for Amputee Football held in Kenya.
