The Niger State Government has stated that the intervention needed to end the suffering of motorists along the deplorable Minna-Suleja Road is beyond the state and therefore appealed to the Federal Government to treat with emergency an intervention for the Trunk A Road.
It was gathered on Monday that there was traffic grid on the road following the blockages caused by a truck that fell into a ditch along Kwakwuti in Paikoro Local Government Area part of the road.
Motorists spent at least six hours on the road and some stranded following the blockages that disallowed commuters coming from the either side of the road to cross over.
Worried by this development, the State Government, through the Commissioner of Information, Culture and Tourism, Jonathan Vatsa, told journalists that though most of the federal roads in the state were in deplorable condition, the importance of the Minna-Suleja Road linking Federal Capital Territory, Abuja was too strategic to be left in such deplorable state.
Vatsa disclosed that government had earlier intervened in rehabilitating some spoilt sections of the road six months back, but the collapse of the Tegina-Birni Gwari-Kaduna Road has diverted heavy duty vehicles to the Minna-Suleja Road, thereby worsening the situation.
Vatsa stated that the need to appeal to the Federal Government has become imperative in view of the fact that the road is a federal road linking the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja with some states of the federation.
He said: “The road is above us, above our resources.
“And since the contract for the dualization of the road was earlier awarded, we are appealing to the Federal Government to call back the contractor to site because what the road needs is immediate palliative.”
Vatsa stated the rehabilitation of the road would go a long way to ease the suffering of commuters who have been subjected to a lot of hardship, adding: “We are really worried by the state of this road.”
