The Former Deputy Chief of Polish State Security was handed a suspended sentenced on Tuesday for his role in the 2010 plane crash that killed Poland’s former President, Lech Kaczynski.
General Pavel Bielavny was also fined $2,571 by a district court in Warsaw, which ruled that he failed to fulfil his duties in the preparations for the Smolensk trip.
Kacyznski was on his way to a memorial for the 22,000 Poles executed by the Soviets during World War II’s Katyn massacre when his aircraft crashed in Smolensk on April 10, 2010.
The court ruled that Bielavny should not have chosen the Russian city for the landing, but it also rejected speculations that the plane had been under attack when it crashed.
The ruling is yet to come into force.
The crash, which killed over 90 people, including other Polish political and military leaders, in Smolensk has continued to generate conspiracy theories and has dampened diplomatic relations with Russia.
Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the brother of the deceased president and current leader of Poland’s ruling Law and Justice Party, was pleased with the court’s decision.
“I hope there will be other sentences,” he said.
