NTTF trials: Unseeded Aregbesola defeats No. 1 seeded Hussein

The Nigeria Table Tennis Federation trials holding at the National Stadium in Lagos on Sunday recorded an upset when unseeded Nimota Aregbesola defeated number one seeded Alimat Hussein 11-7, 11-5, 11-7, 11-8 (4-0).
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the trials was to select players for the forthcoming ITTF Classics tagged: “Lagos Open.”
It is scheduled to hold from May 18 to May 22 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
Aregbesola, who had earlier defeated Sidikat Yaya 9-11, 11-4, 13-11, 13-7, 13-9 (4-1), described her victory over Hussein as a surprise.
She said though she prepared for the match, mixed emotions were going on within her before the encounter.
She said: “Hussein is a seeded player and that alone was scary.
“Nevertheless, I didn’t allow that to dampen me so much and that was why I could win my game.
“She’s a good player, no doubt, and we all know table tennis also comes with luck.”
Reacting to her defeat, Hussein said it was unfortunate that she lost the game.
She said she made efforts to salvage the game so that it would end in her favour but the better side won.
“Aregbesola is a good player,” she said.
NAN reports that the ITTF Classic would feature men and women singles, as well as the U-21 men and women singles.
