At least 60 worshippers were reportedly abducted when bandits raided Emmanuel Baptist Church located in Kakau Daji, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, Kaduna chapter, Rev. John Hayab, confirmed the attack to Daily Trust.
The armed gang stormed the church during service on Sunday, shooting sporadically.
Hayab said the incident happened on Sunday but details did not come out on time because there was no telecommunications network in the area.
There were reports that about 100 people were abducted but the CAN chairman said he could only confirm 60 based on the report from the villagers.
He said: “As at yesterday (Monday), I confirmed about 60 worshippers were missing and it was actually one person that died.
“They had a song service that day; when the gunmen came, they went to the children church first but changed their minds and surrounded the church.”
According to Hayab, when people saw them, they started running and the bandits opened fire and killed one person instantly.
The Kaduna State Commissioner Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, confirmed the attack and the killing of one worshipper, but was silent on the number of the people abducted.
Aruwan gave the name of the deceased as Yusuf Dauda.
