Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe, the National Vice-Chairman (South-West) of the Peoples Democratic Party, on Monday said support in the South West was vital in ensuring the party’s success in the 2015 presidential election.
Ogundipe made the comment at the launch of Goodluck Lagos Grassroots Project founded by the Lagos PDP Forum of Council Chairmen.
He said that the zone was germane to the success of any presidential candidate.
He said: “South-West is key to the 2015 general elections.
“Lagos as a state has the highest number of votes nationwide.
“We need people to support Jonathan.
“Jonathan has done better that any president in contemporary Nigeria.
“The South West is better off under Jonathan.
“The Lagos/Ibadan Expressway and Apapa roads attest to this.”
Ogundipe said that the President had done a lot on the railway and the nation’s economy was booming, especially with Lagos being the economic nerve centre of the nation.
“Without Lagos, South-West will be in shambles,” he said.
He urged the party members to galvanise votes for PDP candidates in the zone.
“We must shun apathy and vote in the people to get the best for the zone,” he said.
The PDP leader urged the party to visit aggrieved members, who lost in its various primaries, and plead with them.
Ogundipe said: “Go to the houses of those who lost in the primaries to beg them.
“We did so in Ekiti.
“No one person can win the election alone.”
Also speaking, the Lagos State Chairman of PDP, Chief Tunji Shelle, urged the people of the state to vote for Jonathan and the party candidates.
Shelle said: “Let us vote for PDP candidates for the National Assembly so that they can support the transformation agenda of Jonathan.
“There are a lot of distractions.
“Yet it did not derail his agenda.
“Jonathan can make Nigeria work and function.
“We will give Jonathan 99 per cent votes in Lagos.”
In his speech, Alhaji Bolaji Onibudu, Lagos GLGP Chairman, announced plans by the group to build grassroots campaign to re-elect Jonathan in the state.
Onibudu, who is also the party chairman in Surulere Council Area, said that the campaign would be rigorous and would highlight outstanding successes of Jonathan’s administration.
Giving reasons why the people of Lagos State should re-elect Jonathan, Onibudu said Jonathan’s administration had made giant strides in the economic development of the country and ensured national unity.
He said: “For the first time in the history of Nigeria, we have an opportunity to build on a real legacy of stability and progress.
“The past four years have seen the Jonathan’s PDP government laying a foundation for the future of Nigeria.
“Now, more than ever, Nigeria needs a Federal Government that will bring us together which Jonathan has been doing.”
