No fewer than 130 golfers across the federation are expected to participate at the 5th edition of the Insurance Golf Open scheduled to hold at the Ibadan Golf Club from February 24 to February 25.
Idowu Salami, Captain of IGC disclosed this to newsmen in Ibadan on Friday, during a briefing ahead of the tournament.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the tournament is been sponsored by a conglomeration of insurance companies in the country.
Salami said that the competition was one of the major tournaments of the club.
He said that the tournament would feature both amateur and professional golfers from across the country.
He said: “The tournament is by virtue of a conglomeration of insurance companies that have come together to showcase themselves and give back to the society through sports.
“The tournament is initiated and facilitated by one of our past captains and an insurance broker, Chief Babajide Olatunde-Agbeja. He is a member of the trustees of the IGC.’’
Salami said that there are three organised professional tournaments in the club.
He said: “We have three professional tournaments in the club: the Sovereign Trust handles one of the tournaments, while a conglomerate of other insurance companies handles the remaining two.
“Lawyers in the club have also come together to initiate the ‘Bar and Bench Open’, while the Medical Doctors have also collaborated to organise theirs.
“We encourage more people to play the game because it is beneficial to our health, and also allows for networking among the people.’’
The IGC captain said that the successes recorded in the previous tournaments have helped in promoting tourism and hospitality businesses in the metropolis.
Salami said: “The tournament would also feature four to five pros that will compete for a huge sum of money.’’
He added that only a few female golfers would participate in the tournament, due to the ongoing female golf tournament in Ilorin.
