A senator-elect, Diyo Melaye, has cautioned his party, the All Progressives Congress, over undue interference in the emergence of the leadership of the National Assembly.
Melaye was reacting to the position of the party on the criteria would-be Senate president must possess and the meeting by the hierarchy of the APC has scheduled with members of the National Assembly for Thursday in Abuja.
He specifically told the National Working Committee of the APC to be guided by the fact that the Senate is guided by rules in all its workings.
Melaye, who is favourably disposed to the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as the Senate president, said the NWC should only offer advice in the process that will lead to the emergence of the National Assembly leadership.
Melaye, the Coordinator Like Minds Senators-elect, said: “The NWC is there to offer advice and not to determine those who will contest leadership positions on the floor of the Senate.
“The constitution of Nigeria and the rules of the Senate are clear on how a Senate president could emerge.”
