Kwara State has emerged the champion of the maiden edition of North Central Zone Athletics Championship.
The state won a total of nine gold, five silver and two bronze medals.
The one-day athletics championship, which was powered by the 1st Vice President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Alhaji Tunde AbdulKareem, featured athletes from Kwara, Benue, Plateau and Niger States and the Federal Capital Territory, who competed for cash rewards and honours in different categories.
The event was held at the Main Bowl of the Kwara State Stadium.
Benue State came second with three gold, four silver and two bronze medals, while Plateau State occupied the third position, with one silver and five bronze medals.
Kogi State and the FCT both jointly occupied the fourth position, with silver and a bronze medal each.
Niger State, which occupied the bottom of the medals table, only managed a bronze medal.
Speaking at the occasion, AbdulKareem said the championship was aimed at discovering more talents for future events.
He appreciated the state government, sports council and the athletes for their support and participation, noting that he would continue to support sports development in the state and the country.
