The Independent National Electoral Commission said on Wednesday that it would issue new Permanent Voter Cards to individuals, who lost their own to Boko Haram insurgency in the North East.
The Administrative Secretary of INEC in Borno State, Malam Abdulhamid Buba made this known at a news conference in Maiduguri on the upcoming Continuous Voters Registration scheduled for Thursday across the country.
He said that INEC had made adequate preparation to ensure success of the event in the state.
Buba said: “It is in the build up toward the 2019 General Elections that the Continuous Voters Registration is billed to start on Thursday nationwide to further sanitise the register.
“The exercise is to take care of eligible persons who have attained the age of 18 after the last registration.”
He said that the exercise would also take care of persons who were not able to register during the last exercise.
Buba said: “We shall attend to those whose PVCs were destroyed as a result of the activities of insurgents in Borno.
“Individuals who have relocated from one place to another and wish to transfer their voting points will also be considered also.”
According to him, the exercise will take place across the 16 Local Government Areas considered safe enough as well as Internally Displaced Persons camps in Maiduguri to ensure fairness to all.
Buba said: “In some LGAs like Gwoza, we plan to collaborate with the military to ensure that we also capture eligible voters who have returned home after finishing with those in IDPs camps in Maiduguri.”
He said INEC had trained 185 of its staff in Maiduguri to ensure that the conduct of the exercise was hitch free.
