The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ijeshatedo Police Station, Chief Superintendent of Police Muhammed Yakubu, has been detained following his alleged murder of a fashion designer, Jamiu Ayoade.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, ordered the DPO’s detention, while investigation into what the led to the shooting and subsequent death of the fashion designer continues.
Owoseni said: “As a follow up to the killing at Ijeshatedo, the police have sent some undercover policemen to the community to find out the truth from the residents and some eyewitnesses.
“We cannot rely on what the DPO told us.
“The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has enjoined every police officer to follow the creed of the Nigerian Police Force and also allow the rule of law to prevail in everything they do.
“The IGP will not support or encourage impunity.
“Those who perpetrate impunity in uniform will not be treated with kids’ gloves.
“The DPO is presently under investigation as the law will take its cause on him.
“He has been arrested and taken into custody.
“I have visited the victim’s family and got their own side of the story.
“The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigations Department, the Area M Commander and decoy teams have started investigation into the matter.
“I have assured the victim’s family that they would get justice and that police will do everything to get to the root of the matter.
“The law will take his course.”
The DPO on Sunday, around 7:30pm, led some policemen to Wosilat Daudu Street, Ijeshatedo, where Ayoade was attending his friend’s birthday party.
The DPO allegedly went into the passage of a building where the deceased was sitting with his girlfriend and shot him in the head at close range.
