There are strong indications that the crisis within the ranks of the senators elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress may be resolved next week.
The thinking within the APC caucus in the National Assembly is that the crisis would be resolved as the upper chamber resumes for plenary next week.
It could be recalled that APC senators became divided into two factions over the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as the President of the Senate, a development that ran against the position of the party’s leadership.
A group, Senators of Like Minds, rooted for Saraki as Senate president, while another group, the Unity Forum, canvassed for Senator Ahmad Lawan.
However, one of the arrowheads of the Unity Forum, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, on his Twitter handle on Thursday, advised that members of the Unity Forum, Senators of Like Minds and other such caucuses should collapse their structures and form a united front that will work with Senate leadership for the interest of Nigeria.
Ashafa, who is a second term senator, urged senators to put aside their personal ambitions for now.
He appealed to them not to take the goodwill of Nigerians for granted.
Ashafa, on his Twitter handle, said: “As the National Assembly prepares for business of lawmaking upon resumption the Senators elected on the platform of APC have been urged to close ranks and settle down to work knowing the enormity of the task before them.
“I have advised that members of APC Senators Unity Forum, Senators of Like Minds and other such caucuses in the 8th Senate should collapse their structure and form a united front that will work with the leadership of the Senate for the interest of Nigeria.
“As second term senator and one always to be a bridge-builder amongst my colleague, I assert, we have to realise that the hope of Nigerians are high. The government has amassed a lot of political capital.
“Having been elected as result of the massive build-up of goodwill for the APC and stark disenchantment with the PDP government, the goodwill of Nigerians must not be taken for granted. So I make this call for one Nigeria and it starts with us, one National Assembly united for the progress of our constituency nd translating change into policies and law that yield tangible beneficial result.”
