Kogi State youths in the All Progressives Congress are protesting the imposition of Alhaji Yahaya Bello as the gubernatorial candidate of the party because the former governorship aspirant of the party also in the countdown to the 2015 general election picked the form of the Social Democratic Party after dumping the APC.
And after this he also romanced the Peoples Democratic Party, whose governorship candidate and incumbent, Captain Idris Wada, he campaigned for.
Bello, also known as Fairplus, had chosen Olusola George Olumoroti as his deputy governorship candidate to contest the inconclusive election in Kogi State as SDP candidate.
Bello, who was runner up to the late APC gubernatorial candidate for Kogi State, Prince Abubakar Audu, during the APC primaries, stepped down his SDP ambition to campaign for Wada.
APC power brokers in Abuja, led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Dr. Babachar Lawal, are however applying pressure on the leadership of the party to impose Bello, who had defected to the SDP and then PDP after the primaries.
Meanwhile, the APC has declared that contrary to notions held in certain quarters, it has not settled for anybody as replacement for Audu.
The Acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, Timi Frank, disclosed this in Abuja on Sunday.
Frank said the party would take a final position on Audu’s replacement on Monday, adding that the party was still consulting on the matter.
He said: “We are still consulting on the issue.
“We would take a final stand on the issue of Audu’s replacement on Monday and we are definitely going to issue a statement on the issue.”
Bello is an Ibira from the Kogi Central Senatorial District.
However, there is division amongst stakeholders of the Kogi State chapter of the APC as those mainly from the more populous Kogi East Senatorial District axis are rooting for Mohammed, the eldest son of Prince Audu, while their counterpart from Kogi West Senatorial District, popularly known as the Okun axis have express preference for Audu’s running mate, James Abiodun Faleke.
Faleke presently represents Ikeja Federal Constituency of Lagos State in the House of Representatives.
