All over the world, March 20 is the World Social Workers’ Day and Nigeria is not left out. While the states and the FCT have concluded plans to celebrate, the FCT chapter has line up various activities to mark the day.
According to the National President of the National Association of Social Workers, Mr. Olawale Nathaniel: “The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Global agenda on Social Work and Social Development’ from where the Nigerian chapters have taken cue and organized the activities for this year.”
The FCT Chairman, Mr. Olu Jacob said that in Abuja, “we are creating and extending partnerships between institutions in the local, regional, national and global agencies, as well as, building capacities to speak with a single but strong professional voice. These will help us to undertake collective advocacy and action that will make for a better world where we live.”
Jacob added: “The day will be celebrated in all states on March 20 while at the national level, a congress of social workers will hold at the Eagle Square in Area 10 on March 24, where a formal declaration for next year’s action plans will be made while on March 25 March visitations will be made to social work institutions and homes and on March 26 the Global Agenda will be presented to the Federal Government of Nigeria for implementation.”
Speaking at the event, the Kwara State Chairman of the association, Mallam Mustapha, said: “Social workers have come a long way in Nigeria.
“With the increased realisation and need for the place of social workers, we are strengthening collaborative modules between the organisations that provide service to inspire practitioners and educators as a media of making competence and idea sharing freely available.
“We must enrich the practice, influence level and sustain the education and personal development of our members nationwide.”
