Why we evacuated Almajiri — Kano

The Kano State Commissioner of Education, Muhammad Sa’id, has said the evacuation of Almajiri from Kano to their states of origin was to safeguard public health and stem the spread of Coronavirus pandemic.

Sa’id stated this in a statement by Aliyu Yusuf, the Information Officer of the Ministry, on Tuesday in Kano.

The Commissioner, who is also the Chairman of the Evacuation Committee, said the initiative was in good faith aimed at combating Coronavirus and to fast track integration of Almajiri children into formal school system.

He said: “Against the misconception of some people in the society that the government is planning to stop Qur’anic Schools in the state, it was an effort to bring sanity to the  system.

“It is also part of a comprehensive effort to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.”

Sa’id added that the the committee was mandated to identify non indigenous Almajiri’s studying in Kano as well as return them back to their respective states of origin.

He disclosed that the committee has adopted proactive security measures to ensure the safety of the Almajiris, while conveying them to their states of origin.

According to him, the exercise will be a continuous one.

He said: “As part of its efforts to decongest Tsangaya and Qur’anic Schools in the state, Kano State Government began the evacuation of 489 Almajiris to Katsina State.

“The Almajiris will be evacuated to Katsina; Kaduna, Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Zamfara, Gombe and Nassarawa States as well as Niger Republic.”
